These are intercessions based on The Road to Emmaus. When I wrote them, a member of our community had recently died, so I included a section praying for him and his family.
Provider God,
We pray for all who, like the Emmaus disciples, are on the road.
We especially pray for refugees, foreign workers and estranged families.
Jesus, just as you walked with the disciples, accompany them in their fears, hopelessness and loneliness.
As their lives have been turned upside down give direction, hope and support among the demands they face.
Let them experience hospitality from friends and strangers, urging them to ‘stay when it’s almost evening and the day is nearly over’.
Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
Wise Councillor,
We pray for all who, like the Emmaus disciples, are filled with doubt and questions.
We especially pray for those searching for meaning, those who wrestle with their faith, and those who have lost sight of life’s purpose.
Jesus, just as you walked with the disciples, meet them in their anxiety, upheaval and frustration.
As their lives feel upside down give direction, hope and support among the demands they face.
Let them encounter you offering them bread of life, inviting them into community, and opening their eyes to your goodness.

We pray for our friend N.
Thank you for her/his kindness, generosity, humour, wisdom, love, and faithful service.
We have been blessed by her/his companionship during our journey with you.
As you gathered with the Emmaus disciples around the table so welcome N. into your eternal home.
Grow the faith and goodness she/he inspired in others and let his memory fill all of us with joy.

Great Comforter,
We pray for all who, like the Emmaus disciples, have recently lost a loved one or are otherwise grieving or disillusioned.
We especially pray for N.’s family, [particularly …], and for her/his friends and community, including us all.
Jesus, just as you walked with the disciples, accompany all sadness, confusion and anger.
As their lives have been turned upside down give direction, hope and support among the demands they face.
Let them and us hear your voice so that all our hearts may burn with your love and scripture may be our guide.
Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
Merciful Father,
Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son,
Jesus Christ.
